Saeco Avanti App

Creative lead / Product designer

First shown in concept form at IFA 2013, The Saeco Avanti App was the world’s first fully connected coffee machine. Together with the HomeCooker NeXt App, Smart Air Purifier App and Grooming App, these revolutionary ideas redefined Philips' market position, adding $500m to its brand value.

Brief : Philips wanted a proposal for ideas on how the product could be connected, enhance the user experience for coffee aficionados, providing genuine value.

Approach : I liaised closely with the UX lead and Philips’ design and development teams from concept, through to the end design, to create the tablet app. Working in sprints, I was required to present each phase to key stakeholders. Defining the main offering, layout, look and feel, I was responsible for the crafting of a luxury style, and added features to create a more social coffee-making experience. I commissioned 3D rendered animations of coffees being made, articles and step-by-step video guides on setup and cleaning. The coffee machine itself had a small display so we created an intuitive user interface so people could easily control the machine though the app. The final product allowed coffee connoisseurs to customise their favourite beverages, create queues, save coffee choices and share.
